Role Overview / Objectives

The Technical Solutions Designer is responsible for owning customer solutions across both standard and non-standard requirements.

The role has a strong internal technical focus (approximately 60%), combined with a customer-facing focus (approximately 40%).

An engineering background with growth into a broader architecture function is essential for success in this role.

This is a full-time position based in Umhlanga, Durban, forming part of the core Architecture function within the Borwood business.

Key Responsibilities

1. Pre-Sales, Sales and Customer Interface

  • Act as a technical interface between customers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders
  • Responsible for solution feasibility, qualification, and clear articulation of proposed solutions
  • Determine internal and external technology requirements, technical dependencies, pricing considerations, and vendor inputs for each solution
  • Produce and provide detailed customer design requirements
  • Ensure proposals and solution amendments are delivered with high quality and within prescribed timelines
  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, and project delivery teams to finalise solutions
  • Provide technical and solutions support to the sales team
  • Assist in evaluating sales opportunities based on technical requirements and alignment with Borwood’s capabilities
  • Engage internally with sales and project teams
  • Engage externally with customers and suppliers

2. Technical Interface

  • Consult with technical and engineering teams to assist in the development of complete solutions, including:
    • Equipment and hardware selection
    • System configurations
    • Network and infrastructure design
  • Ensure all solutions comply with Borwood’s architecture and engineering standards, specifications, policies, and protocols
  • Produce clear and accurate Design Diagrams and Technical Solution Documents (TSDs)
  • Provide technical oversight throughout the full project lifecycle
  • Analyse infrastructure resource utilisation, trends, and capacity planning requirements
  • Engage closely with internal engineering teams

3. Operations Interface

  • Produce and deliver complete solution delivery and support packs in line with operational (Delivery and Support) requirements
  • Work closely with internal support and operations teams to ensure smooth handover and ongoing support readiness

4. General Responsibilities

  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team where required
  • Fulfil all training and examination requirements in line with Borwood’s skills and certification matrix
  • Participate in and contribute to both internal and external meetings as required
  • Assist with additional tasks where necessary to achieve project and business deliverables
  • Be willing and able to work at various locations as required for successful project delivery
  • Act as a professional and courteous representative of Borwood at all times

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of Pre-Sales and/or Solution Architecture experience within a Service Provider, ICT, or Telecommunications environment
  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on Technical Engineering experience
  • Relevant network certifications are advantageous, including but not limited to:
    • Cisco
    • Fortinet
    • AWS
    • Microsoft Azure
  • Strong technical understanding of:
    • Networking
    • Voice solutions
    • Secure cloud products and services
  • Solid knowledge and experience with physical network infrastructure
  • Proven experience communicating complex technical solutions directly with customers
  • Experience producing structured technical designs and requirements documentation

  • Strong proficiency in Visio, with the ability to create both internal and customer-facing diagrams

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites as required
